Introduction
In the second quarter of 2019, the mining sector contributed 14.7% to Botswana’s GDP, according to the Bank of Botswana. Data from the International Trade Centre’s Trade Map shows minerals to the value of US$5.1bn were exported in 2018, which was 78% of the country’s total export earnings. In 2018, Botswana was the world’s second largest diamond producer by value and volume, after Russia, according to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS). The country is ranked highly by the Fraser Institute’s latest Annual Survey of Mining Companies in terms of policy and investment attractiveness.
Strengths
• Botswana is an established mining country.
• Botswana is ranked highly by the Fraser Institute’s latest Annual Survey of Mining Companies.
• Botswana was the fourth largest producer of natural soda ash in 2018.
• In 2018, Botswana was the world’s second largest diamond producer by value and volume.
• Large soda ash, coal and diamond reserves.
Weaknesses
• Diamond, gold and soda ash production each dominated by one player.
• Small number of mineral producers.
Opportunities
• Deposits of coal bed methane, cobalt, copper, iron ore, lead, manganese, nickel, silver, uranium and zinc have been identified and are available to be mined.
• Large areas of the country are underexplored.
Threats
• No rail infrastructure in place to export coal.
• Poor roads in remote areas.
• Weak world economic growth leads to low diamond demand.
Outlook
The Botswana Geoscience Institute believes the country’s mining sector will become more diverse as a greater variety of minerals will be produced by a larger number of companies over the medium term. Diamond production is set to carry on for decades, while copper and silver production from the Khoemacau mine is planned to start in 2021. The production of coal should increase as soon as rail infrastructure for exports is in place, while coal bed methane, manganese and uranium production could also commence in the medium term. Botswana’s mining sector therefore looks to be entering a period of growth.
